Astronomer Geography Cartography Astronomy Education: Whitgift School, Croydon (1883-1892); MA (Trinity College, Cambridge) Career: Second assistant at the Cambridge observatory under Sir Robert Ball (FRS 1873) and demonstrator in practical astronomy in the university (1895); chief assistant (1903-1913); lecturer in surveying and cartography in the Cambridge school of geography and an association with the Royal Geographical Society (1908); gave annual Gresham lectures in astronomy at the University of London (1913-1914); involved with the Geographical Society’s move before the First World War and later in planning centenary extensions, as well as widening the scope of the journal to include cartography; map preparation work for general staff (1914-1918); oversaw the compilation of a map of Europe and the Middle East, including an Arabic edition, for the British Council (c1940). Honours: CBE 1920 Awards/Medals: Gold medal of the Royal Astronomical Society (1912) Victoria Medal (1938) Cullum medal of the American Geographical Society (1943) Memberships: Royal Astronomical Society secretary (1909-1912) and VP (1912-1913). Spouse: Lily Mary (d. 1928), the daughter of Jonathan Packman, a civil engineer (11 April 1899). Children: Roger Packman, art critic, and David Arthur Gilbert (d. 1948), junior bursar of Trinity College, Cambridge. Known for measurement of solar parallax.
