He was briefly imprisoned by Jacobites in Cork in 1690 due to his attendance in James II's parliament. In a work published after the 1688 Revolution, he appointed William of Orange as a quasi Protestant saviour. He believed strongly in the need for more religious books to be supplied in the Irish language. He was not particularly active in the Royal Society and did not pay contributions after his admission fee.
