His appointment as Commissioner of Assessments derived from the 1659 Act of Assessment, which aimed at the assessment, collection, and payment of set amounts of money from counties and cities within England, Scotland, and Ireland, in order to pay for costs incurred during the Commonwealth. During his position as an MP for Herefordshire, he was active in James II's Parliament and was involved in 23 committees, including one regarding the general naturalisation of Huguenot refugees.
