Elizabeth Newport 2) Frances Cranfield (widow of Richard Sackville, 5th Earl of Dorset (FRS 1665)) One of Powle's more noteworthy speeches showed his early sympathy for a broader church as he opposed the established religion according to the 'Thirty-Nine Articles'. He was well-known as an opposition speaker in parliament, e.g. speaking out against the king's declaration of indulgence in 1673 and promoting the Test Act. He also had contacts abroad, in particular in The Hague with William III. The collections of precedents, journals and manuscripts was split up across a variety of organisations, with the Landsdowne collection and Bodleian Library holding them. Generally, his legal and historical knowledge was highly respected amongst his peers. Powle's activity within the Society decreased with monetary contributions reducing, possibly in part due to lack of meetings and centralised organisation of the Society during the Plague.
