Began his scientific career with investigations on the structure and development of the Brachiopoda, development of the river lamprey, Gephyrean worms, parasitic worms: his published work on this subject, which eventually extended to nearly fifty papers in scientific journals, gradually building his scientific reputation as a competent and successful researcher; held successive positions at Cambridge, of university demonstrator in comparative anatomy (1886); lecturer in the advanced morphology of the Invertebrata (1894); and reader in zoology (1908-1920); elected a fellow of Christ's College (1887) and became college tutor in natural sciences (1892); appointed secretary to Cambridge's Museums and Lecture Rooms Syndicate, which saw him in charge of all university laboratories and museums (1891); collaborated with Professor Ernest MacBride (FRS 1905) in writing a Textbook of Zoology (1901): collaborated with Sidney Frederic Harmer (FRS 1898) in editing the Cambridge Natural History, ten volumes which appeared between 1895 and 1909; edited the biological series of the Pitt Press Natural Science Manuals and the Fauna of British India series; co-editor with Professor George Henry Falkiner Nuttall (FRS 1904) of the journal Parasitology (1908-1914); assisted in editing the Journal of Economic Biology (1905-1913); elected master of Christ's College (1910),a a post he held until his death; was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge (1917-1919); visited Trinidad in order to lay the foundation stone of the new buildings of the College of Tropical Agriculture (1924).
