Naval officer; Hydrographer Meteorology Hydrography Career: Joined the Royal Navy as Master's Assistant (1854); served in the Baltic (1854-1856); joined the surveying service (1861); Navigating Officer on HMS Challenger, during the Challenger Expedition (1872-1876); wrote the hydrographical section of the report; Staff Commander (by 1891); Assistant Hydrographer to the Admiralty (1891-1907).
