Scientific instrument maker; Printer Mathematics Education: Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Wakefield Career: Travelled to Holland, where he learned Dutch and worked as a printer in Delft and Rotterdam; Hydrographer to Charles II; planned a canal from the River Thames to the River Severn Parents: James Moxon Married: 1) Susan Marson; 2) Hannah Cooke Children: Susan Moxon; James Moxon Moxon established a good reputation for himself as a globe- and map-maker as well as for his mathematical printing. He printed his own book of astronomical tables and those of other contemporaries, such as Oughtred's 'Trignometria' (1657). His petition to the King to be appointed Hydrographer was signed by many subscribers and connections, including Jonas Moore (FRS 1674), Elias Ashmole (FRS 1663), and John Collins (FRS 1667). Moxon also occasionally discussed his work and publications with Robert Hooke (FRS 1663) and was connected with the Society long before his election in 1678. According to some sources, Moxon was also the first tradesman elected into the Society in its first forty years of existence; the merchants that had been elected previously were knights or held public offices.
