MA (1846); MB (1848); LLD (1881) Career: Joined the Army; served as a Surgeon in India (1848); Surgeon Major (1861); retired from the Army (1873); Professor of Zoology, College of Science, Dublin; Professor of Natural History, Queen's College, Cork; wrote travel works; died of pulmonary haemorrhage. Memberships: MRCSE; LRCSE (1848) Parents: Francis Adams (1796–1861), surgeon and translator of Hippocrates, and his Elspeth Shaw (d. 1845). Collected and described species of birds and mammals. Reported on the Maltese cholera epidemic of 1865.
