Career: Went to England (aged 14); Physician, Royal Edinburgh Hospital for Sick Children (c1871); Lecturer in Physiology, Surgeon's Hall, Edinburgh (c1871); Assistant to the Professor of Medical Jusrisprudence, Edinburgh University (1871); Professor of Physiology, Owen's College, Manchester (1873-1885); resigned and set up practice in St Leonard's-on Sea, Sussex (1885); Assistant Physician, St George's Hospital, London (1887-1889); worked in Cambridge, then lived and practised in Berne, Lausanne and Montreux; visited America (1902 and 1903); died of pneumonia. Memberships: MRCPE; FRCPE; FRSE Parents:Joseph Gamgee (1801–1894), veterinary surgeon and pathologist, and Mary Ann West. Spouse: Mary Louisa, daughter of J. Proctor Clark (1875). Children: One son and two daughters. Established knowledge of physical and chemical properties of haemoglobin. Investigated diurnal variations of the temperature of the human body.
