Zoology Ornithology Education: Frankfurt; Berlin; PhD (Jena); Heidelberg; Hon MA (Cantab) Career: Studied under Ernst Haeckel and Karl Gegenbauer; travelled to London to work on the Natural History Museum's Catalogue of Birds (1880); Curator of the Strickland Collection, Cambridge University, succeeding Osbert Salvin (1884-1920); Lecturer on the Morphology of Vertebrates (1884-1920); became naturalized British citizen (1882); died suddenly. Parents: His father was an Inspector of the Prussian Royal Forests. Spouse: Clara Maud, daughter of Sir George Paget (FRS 1873). Commemorated in the scientific names of three species of Mexican lizards: Abronia gadovii, Anolis gadovii, and Urosaurus gadovi. His work on the classification of birds based on anatomical and morphological characters was influential and made use of by Alexander Wetmore in his classification of North American birds.
