PhD (1858, Heidelberg) Career: Went to England (1858) ; Assistant in chemical laboratory, Oxford (1858-9); moved to London and worked at Guy's and St Bartholomew's Hospitals (1862); worked in the chemical works of Thomas Farmer, Kennington, where he invented a generic class of materials called Sprengel explosives (1865-1870); focused on explosives research (1870-1873); made a royal Prussian professor (1893); continued active chemical work, including a high-temperature process for making diamonds (1905). Memberships: Chemical Society 1864 Parents: George Sprengel of Schillerslage; naturalised British (between 1865 and 1870). Discovered the explosive nature of picric acid; invented the mercurial air pump; patented safety explosives.
