Career: Nautical surveyor, The Royal Navy; served under Captain Martin White on the surveys of the Channel Islands and English and Irish channels (1810-1827); appointed command of the 'Linnet' (1827); conducted surveys of the Bristol Channel and ports of Liverpool and Milford (1827-1834); promoted to rank of Commander (1835); appointed command of the 'Lucifer' surveying the coast of Lancashire and Cumberland (1835-1845); appointed to command of the 'Avon' surveying the west coast of Africa (1845-1846); post rank granted (1846); appointed to the command of expedition of the HMS 'Herald' and HMS 'Torch' for exploration and survey in the western Pacific including the west coast of Australia and Coral Sea, mapping the route outside the Great Barrier Reff by the Torres Strait to Dutch colonies and clarifying the navigabale routes to other islands (1852-1860); promoted to rank of Rear Admiral (1864); Vice Admiral (1870); Admiral (1877) Honours: Kt 1867; Freedom of the borough of Liverpool 1834 Memberships: Literary and Philosophical Society of Liverpool (1834); Corporation of Trinity House (1841); Corresponding Member of the United States Institute for the Promtion of Science (1841) Parents: Henry Denham Expert in nautical navigation and surveying, hydrographical engineering and improvement of commercial ports including Liverpool, Swansea and bideford. Best known for his command of the surveying expedition of the HMS 'Torch' and HMS 'Herlad' in the Pacific from 1852-1860, resulting in much improved charts of the area and for which he was knighted in 1867. Advised the New South Wales Government during the Russian War of 1854-1855. Executed several commissions for the Lords Committee of the Privy Council for Trade.
