Treasurer to the East India Company Botany Career: Treasurer to the Honourable East India Company (1702-1737); his garden at Mitcham was filled with exotic plants; his 13,000 specimens of dried plants in 74 folio volumes were given to the Oxford Botanic Garden. Parents: John Dubois (bap. 1622, d. 1684), weaver in London, Anne (née Herle), daughter of Charles Herle of Winwick, Lancashire. Succeeded his step-brother as cashier-general of the East India Company in 1702 and retired from the position in 1737. Famous for maintaining a garden with plants of interest from the colonies. Became acquainted with natural historians such ass Hans Sloane, James Petiverm and William Sherard, with whome he shared plants and cultivation observations. Obtained rice seed from India which was introduced into British South Carolina in 1766 via Thomas Marsh. Fellow 30/11/1700 Admitted 27/05/1714, when his election was confirmed by ballot.
