metallurgist Metallurgy Education: University College Sheffield (DMet) Career: Head of the Brown-Firth Research Laboratory, Princess Street, Sheffield (1916); joined the Board of Messrs Thomas Firth and John Brown Limited (1916); credited with the invention of 18/8 stainless steel (18% chromium, 8% nickel) and 18/8 stainless with added titanium, now known as 321 (1924); authored a variety of papers on metallurgy, with particular reference to rust, acid and heat-resistant steels and cast iron.
