Career:
Left education for an apprenticeship with his father’s outfitters’ business in Buter Market, Ipswich (1895); made a name for himself by writing to the The Times claiming to have found irrefutable human artefacts beneath the East Anglian crag deposits, challenging the orthodox view of the antiquity of human beings, an event which brought him support and friendship of Sir Ewin Ray Lankester (FRS 1875) (1910); neglected the family business in pursuit of archaeological research; published extensively; delivered the Huxley memorial lecture at Imperial College, London (1939); died of heart failure and coronary thrombosis (1944).
Memberships:
Prehistoric Society of East Anglia (President 1914–15; 1932–3)
Ipswich Museum (President 1929)</Activity>
