Soldier Geology Education: Wellington College (1878–82); Royal Military Academy, Woolwich (1882–4) Career: Lieutenant, Royal Engineers (1884-retirement in 1904); posted to Gibraltar, where explored hr its caves and sent specimens to the British Museum (1886); Director General, Geological Survey of Egypt (1896-1898); served in the Great War (1914-1919); Secretary-general of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (1919); Director and Secretary, Science Museum (1920); general secretary of the International Research Council (1928). Honours: Kt 1926 Memberships: FGS FZS FRGS FRMS (President 1915-1917) Awards/Medals: Honorary secretary of the Royal Geographical Society Victoria Medal (1911) Symons gold medal (1922) Parents: Thomas Casey Lyons, and Helen, daughter of George Young, of Apsley Towers, Ryde, Isle of Wight. Spouse: Helen Hardwick, daughter of the London architect Philip Charles Hardwick (1896) He played a significant role in he perparation of the Royal Society's Record published in 1940, and was instrumental in overseeing the publication of the Society's Notes and Records. Despite facing displacement from his house and library due t bombing and grappling with arthritis-related challenges in 1940, Lyons initiated the writing of his book, "The Royal Society, 1660-1940: a History of its Administration under its Charters". This work was eventually published posthumously in 1944.
