epidemiologist and medical statistician Medical statistics Epidemiology Education: Merchant Taylors' School (1889-1896); University College, London; London Hospital Career: Demonstrator for Leonard Hill (FRS 1900) at the London Hospital Medical College (1905); studied under Karl Pearson (FRS 1896); appointed statistician to the Lister Institute (1910); served in the Royal Army Medical Corps, later in charge of a medical research unit at the Ministry of Munitions (1914-1918); joined the Ministry of Health, responsible for medical statistics (1919); professor of Epidemlogy and Vital Statistics at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (1928-1945). Memberships: FRCP Socialist Medical Association (founding member) Parents: Major Greenwood (1854–1917), general practitioner, and Annie (1858–1904), daughter of P. C. Burchell MB. Spouse: Rosa (1880–1945), daughter of Andreas Baur. Remembered for the Greenwood formula for the variance or standard error (SE) of the Kaplan–Meier estimator of survival. Known for Greenwood Statistic, used to evaluate clustering of events in time or locations in space.
