Career: Succeeded to his father's estate (1742); went to Douai; later was under the care of John Turberville Needham (FRS 1746); Trustee of the British Museum (1791); his superb collection of marbles and terracottas were purchased by the British Museum after his death, including the famous Discobolus, thus augmenting the British Museum's classical collection. In 1808 the Museum opened the first purpose-built gallery to house the Townley Collectyion.
