Reg. 1667) Career: Fellow of New College (1656); called to the Bar (1662); poet and miniature painter Parents: possibly a clerk in the court of chancery Married: Hannah Carpenter Flatman was well-regarded as a miniaturist and his most well-known subjects were members of his circle of friends, e.g. Charles and Alice Beale and Samuel Woodforde (FRS 1664). Overall, he painted mostly officials or lawyers. He published his large poetry collection 'Poems and Songs' in 1674 and extended it in multiple editions until 1686. Some scholars claim that his work and legacy as a painter was overshadowed by Samuel Cooper. He was never admitted to the Royal Society after his election and remained inactive.
