Soldier Career: Commission in the Royal Artillery (1805), Major General (1855), General (1868); proved the engineering feasibility of the Suez Canal; explored the Euphrates valley and the Tigris (1831-1837); advocated the building of a railway through the Euphrates valley Son of Alexander Chesney of County Antrim, whose patron was Lord Rawdon (later Marquis of Hastings).
