Children: One son and six daughters from first marriage; One daughter, Margaret Ethel MacDonald (1870–1911), a socialist and suffragist. Son-in-law: James Ramsay Macdonald (FRS 1930). Undertook pioneering research in optics and spectroscopy. Published on bromination of rubber.
