mathematician, physicist, and partner in Eyre and Spottiswoode Mechanics Calculus Algebra Physics Mathematics Education: Laleham; Harrow School; MA (Balliol College, Oxford) Career: Took over as Queen’s printer when his father lost capital (1846); issued his mathematical work titled Meditationes analyticae (1847); travelled to eastern Russia, Croatia, and Hungary (1856-1860); embarked on experimental physics; wrote treatise on light polarization for the Nature Series (1874); died of typhoid fever.
