Merchant Linguistics Career: Traded abroad in cloth and books; 'informant' of Samuel Hartlib; invented a universal language, phonetic alphabet and Dutch shorthand Parents: Waldrave Lodwick and Judith Roussel Married: Mary de le Bo With the project to construct a philosophical language, Lodwick was amongst men such as Robert Hooke (FRS 1663), a close friend of his, as well as John Ray (FRS 1667), and Thomas Pigott (FRS 1679), who all strived to complete work started by John Wilkins (FRS 1660). It is also possible that Lodwick was acquainted with the writer Daniel Defoe. In total, Lodwick published three works on the topic of linguistics. His name was used for a time by Esperanto creator L L Zamenhof.
