Robinson & Co., of Glasgow and in his father’s works (1869); studied engineering at Anderson College, Glasgow, followed by the Yorkshire College of Science, Leeds (1871-1876); pursued research on the theory and design of the gas engine, initially with the Glasgow firm of Thomson, Terne & Co., (1877-1885), later with Messrs Tangyes, Birmingham; joined Marks and Clerk consulting engineers and patents agents (1888-1932); engineering director of Messrs Kynoch, of Birmingham (1892-1899); Director and chairman of the National Gas Engine Company, of Ashton under Lyme (1902-1932); Director of Engineering Research for the Admiralty (1914-1918); chairman of the water power resources committee of the conjoint board of scientific societies (1917); member of the water power resources committee appointed by the Board of Trade (1918); chairman of delegacy of the City and Guilds College, South Kensington, London (1918–19). Spouse: Margaret (d. 1930), elder daughter of Alexander Hanney, of Helensburgh (1883). Designer of the world's first successful two-stroke engine.
