physiologist and medical administrator Physiology Education: Trinity College, Cambridge BA; MA; MD; MB Career: Worked under Michael Foster (FRS 1872) in physiological laboratories (c 1890s); tutor at Trinity College (1905-1914); secretary of the Medical Research Committee, renamed the Medical Research Council in 1920 (1914); suffered a serious attack of pneumonia (1915-1916); member of the royal commission on the universities of Oxford and Cambridge (1919-1922); travelled to India as chairman of the Indian government committee for the organisation of medical research (1928); died from a sudden infection (1933). Honours: KBE 1918; CB 1929 Parents: Alfred Evans Fletcher, civil servant, and wife, Sarah Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Morley. Spouse: Mary Frances, second daughter of Charles James Cropper, of Ellergreen, Kendal. Children: Charles Montague Fletcher, epidemiologist, and one daughter. Remembered for his work on muscle physiology.
