DSc (Camb) Career: Travelled to Würzburg to gain laboratory experience under Julius Sachs (1877); travelled to Strasbourg for a year and carried out his first original research, under Heinrich Anton de Bary (1879); returned to England (1880); assistant to Daniel Oliver (FRS 1863) at University College; lecturer in botany in Thomas Henry Huxley’s (FRS 1851) department at South Kensington (1882); regius chair of botany in the University of Glasgow (1885-1925); retired to Ripon (1925). Memberships: FLS FRSE (VP 1910-1916; President 1919–24) Royal Society of Belgium Academy of Science of Munich Royal Danish Society Awards/Medals: Gold Medal of the Linnean Society 1909 Neill prize 1926 Parents: Abraham Bower, wool-stapler and clothier, and Cornelia Morris. Remembered for his study of primitive land plants. Made significant contributions to explaining the evolutionary development of primitive land plants.
