Notably, he introduced rubber plantations to Malaya and Sri Lanka, and introduced cacao from Trinidad to plantations in Sri Lanka. As Director of Kew, in 1896 he appointed the first women gardeners at Kew, Annie Gulvin and Alice Hutchins. His work subsequently formed the basis of practical botanical education in British universities.
