Memberships: FRMS (President 1932-1933) International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (President 1951–4) Parents: Joseph Chapman, chief cashier at Rylands, a Manchester textiles firm, and Sarah Gray. Spouse: Katharine Nora (d. 1967), daughter of Alfred E. Steinthal, barrister and honorary treasurer of Manchester University (1922). Children: Three sons and one daughter. Remembered as a pioneer of solar-terrestrial physics. Coined the term Aeronomy. Known for the Chapman function; Chapman cycle; Chapman–Kolmogorov equation; Chapman–Enskog theory.
