Career: Fellow of Balliol College, Oxford; Millard Lecturer on Physics, Trinity College, Oxford (1879-1886); Duke of Bedford's Lecturer on Chemistry, Balliol College, Oxford (1881-1886); Professor of Chemistry, Owen's College, Manchester (1886-1922); chairman of governors of the Royal Technical College, Salford, Lanacshire (1916); served on the Royal Commissions on Explosion of Coal Dust Mines (1891-1894); the Coal Supply (1902-1905); and the Home Office Committee on Explosions in Mines (1911-1914). Honours: CBE 1918 Memberships: FCS (President 1909-1911) Parents: William Hepworth Dixon, editor of the Athenaeum. Married: 1) (1885) Olive Beechey, daughter of Edward Martin Hopkins of Montreal (she died 1917); 2) Muriel Kinch of Yelverton, Devon Noted for his eminence in physical chemistry, especially in connection with explosions in gases and the effect of water vapour in these reactions.
