Metallurgist and steel maker Metallurgy Education: Sheffield collegiate school; Firth College Career: Began working as an apprentice at Hecla works of Messrs. The Hadfield Steel Foundry Company, the family firm (1875-1882); took over complete control of the works on the death of his father (1888); Chairman and Managing Director of the works (1913-1940); formally opened the new Engineering and Metallurgical Research Laboratories, University of Sheffield (1926).
