He was a vocal critic of Aristotelianism, demonstrated in his first published work 'The Vanity of Dogmatizing' (1661). This text as well as later publications were heavily influenced by Glanvill's interest in philosophical scepticism, ancient Greek philosophy, and the writings of Henry More (FRS 1663). His works in defense of the Royal Society's philosophy saw him engaged in a 'pamphlet war' together with Thomas Sprat (FRS 1664) against Henry Stubbe. Glanvill also published works on witchcraft.
