geologist and physicist Medicine Geology Experimental physics Chemistry Mineralogy Education: Rathmines School, Dublin; Trinity College, Dublin MA (1876-1883) Career: Appointed to a teaching post in the engineering school, Trinity College Dublin (1897); appointed Chair of Geology and Mneralogy at the University of Dublin in (1887), a position he held until his death in 1933. Medals/Awards: Boyle Medal (1911) Murchison Medal (1918) Parents: John Plunket Joly, rector of Clonbulloge, co. Kildare, and Gräfin Julia Anna Maria Georgina, daughter of Graf Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig August von Lusi. Known for his development of radiotherapy in the treatment of cancer and for developing methods of more accurately estimating the age of a geological period, based on the presence of radiocative elements in minerals, the uranium-thorium dating. Has discovered (a) by direct measurement a variation of specific heat constant volume of various gases with density; (b) Iolite in the Granites of Leinster; (c) a heterogeneous Beryl Felspar mineral; (d) the reversal of 'Oldhamia antiqua' and 'radiata' impressions in the Slates of Bray Head.
