He first studied these whilst in hiding on the island of [Great] Bernera, in the Outer Hebrides on the West coast of Scotland, and they became the subject of papers at the Royal Society, including publications within the 'Philosophical Transactions'. Moray's military service was situated close to the end of the Thirty Years' War in Europe. He played an important role in Anglo-Scottish politics and was heavily involved in religious discussions and negotiations, in particular between Charles I and Scottish presbyterianism. In the early 1650s, he was additionally part of the Scottish underground royalist movement.
