Physical chemist; Science administrator Thermodynamics Physical chemistry Chemistry Education: Enfield House, private school, Surbiton; Westminster School (1900); Magdalen College, Oxford (1904-1908) Career: After graduating went to Berlin, where he established a close friendship with Frederick Alexander Lindemann (FRS 1920) (1908); researcher in the Davy–Faraday Laboratory of the Royal Institution, working on colour change indicators (1909); returned to Oxford as a tutorial fellow at Oriel College and to work as a demonstrator in the electrical laboratory (1911); war service in the Royal Garrison Artillery at Portsmouth (1914-1918); Transferred to the Central Flying School at Upavon, where he learned to fly (1915); scientific officer in charge of aircraft testing at the newly established experimental station at Martlesham, Suffolk (1917); appointed assistant controller of research and experiments, on the formation of the Royal Air Force, later becoming acting controller (1918); returned to Oxford (1919); reader in chemical thermodynamics (1920); assistant secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (1920); secretary to the Committee of the Privy Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (1927); rector of Imperial College, London (1929); chairman of the Aeronautical Research Committee and chairman of its engine sub-committee (1933); chair of the sub-committee on aerial defence, later resigning owing to conflicts with Lindemann (1934-1936); advised the chief of air staff on scientific matters (1935); resigned from all his Air Ministry commitments apart from the Aeronautical Research Committee due to conflicts with Lindemann (1940); member of the new Radio Board, insisted upon by Sir Winston Churchill (1942); president of Magdalen College, Oxford (1942); returned to Whitehall as chairman of the defence research policy committee and member of the Advisory Council on Scientific Policy (1947); retired from civil service (1952). Children: (John) Peter Mills Tizard, professor of paediatrics at London University; Richard (b. 1917), engineer and senior tutor at Churchill College, Cambridge; and David (b. 1922), general practitioner in London. Distinguished for his researches in physical chemistry and for the application of physical chemistry to the problems of the internal combustion engine; also for his work in aeronautical science.
