Zoologist Zoology Education: University of Edinburgh MD (1871-1874) Career: Demonstrator of Anatomy under William Turner (1874); Curator of the Zoological Museum at University College, assisting Ray Lankaster (FRS 1845); returned to Scotland to take up the post of Regius Professor of Natural History, University of Aberdeen (1878); moved to the University of Edinburgh, remaining in post (1882-1927). Memberships: FRSE (VP 1907-1912) Harveian Society of Edinburgh Medals/Awards: Neill Prize 1895-98 Spouse: Married three times. His first wife was the sister of Edward Albert Sharpey-Schafer (FRS 1878). Pioneer in the study of hybridisation and other problems of animal breeding.
