Education: From age of five identified as maths prodigy; won scholarship to Cheltenham Ladies College; one of nine women undergraduates out of an intake of 180 on a maths course at Cambridge, but in third year transferred to English. Ph.D on the scientific methods of Sir Francis Bacon, reflecting the intellectual eclecticism for which she is now renowned. Career: Historian Centenary Professor of Renaissance Studies, Queen Mary, University of London; Director, Centre for Editing Lives and Letters, Queen Mary, University of London; visiting professor of history, Princeton University, USA; Honorary Fellow of King's College Cambridge; member of the Board of Management of the Arts and Humanities Research Board; Member of the Council of the Royal Institution until 2009, then resigned at the time of the leaving of Susan Greenfield.
