His research and advocacy transformed the prospects of millions of people, especially children, living in malaria-endemic countries in Africa and Southeast Asia. Working in Thailand, Nick established research networks tackling tropical infections that include dengue fever and tuberculosis, as well as malaria. Through trials conducted by these networks, Nick was successful in demonstrating the effectiveness against malaria of artemisinin, a plant derivative developed in China, as well as the need to combine it with other drugs to avoid the development of resistance. Nick continued to work on drug resistance and the pathophysiology of severe malaria. He advised the World Health Organization on malaria treatment, and advocated the development of research laboratories and public health surveillance in tropical countries.
