Comments that the whole matter would have been much more satisfactory has it turned out that the Free Pendulum was an entirely new idea which originated with Mr. Shortt and Hope-Jones seem undoubtedly to have brought out the first really successful clock embodying this principle, the fact that the idea of the thing was not new but had been suggested, and even manufactured, by others who did not make a real success of it, is bound to considerably affect those who have the giving of awards for new inventions. |
