| Description | Apologises for the quality of the paper on which he writes. His letter will be delivered by M la Roux, recommends him to Blagden. Received Blagden's letter at Brussels. Discusses changes in Edinburgh. Describes his travels in Holland, describes the medical profession there as proud and uncommunicative. Gives an account of the merchants. "Even the British in Holland are distinguished by their vivacity". Gives his opinion of the public buildings and culture. Visited Antwerp and saw paintings by Old Masters. Was pleased with Brussels. Describes journey by coach to Paris, has visited many libraries and bookshops there and has also seen paintings in the Kings Cabinet and the Palais Royale. Charmed by Fountainbleau and has been improving his language skills. Relates his experiences of French indelicacy. The Scottish are very well esteemed. Enjoyed his journey along the Seine and the splendour of the aristocracy. "The peasants here however live in a most wretched situation greviously oppressed and want appears in the face of every one you meet". |
