Title | Letter from Clements R [Robert] Markham, 21 Eccleston Square, to Sir William Huggins |
Creator | Markham; Sir; Clements Robert (1830-1916); President of the Royal Geographical Society |
Recipient | Huggins; Sir; William (1824-1910); British astronomer |
Date | 28 April 1903 |
Description | Markham has received a cable from Captain [William] Colbeck, informing him that the 'Morning' was blocked by ice 8 miles from the winter quarters of the 'Discovery' and the supplies had to be unloaded and transferred by sledge. The movement of the ice also increased the difficulty of the work. 'This makes it quite certain that [Robert Falcon] Scott could not possibly have brought the 'Discovery' back this year'.
The 'Discovery' only has supplies available until next January, and if the 'Morning' does not go with additional supplies in December 'there will be a dreadful catastrophe'. Markham believes they should approach the Government without further delay, so that private subscriptions can be sought if the appeal is unsuccessful. Markham has investigated the spoiled provisions, and reports that the firm of Maconochie are the culprit. Also encloses some extracts concerning Scott's work from Baron [Ferdinand Freiherr von] Richthofen. |
