Title | Letter from [Herbert Hall] Turner, to Sir Michael Foster |
Date | 21 February 1903 |
Description | Explains that thanks to the Royal Society, it is assured that the plates will be taken [at Perth Observatory, for the International Astrographic Chart] - however, [William Ernest] Cooke, the Government Astronomer, has stated that he has no funds to measure the plates. Suggests that they could be measured at Oxford, after Turner finishes measuring his own plates, but that funds must be supplied for this. Repeats a letter sent by the President of the Royal Society [Sir William Huggins] to Turner, and hopes that a Government Grant could be given to the project. Notes that they do not actually want to work on it at Oxford, but that they feel it is their duty to see that the whole chart is as homogenous as possible, and 'as we shall be finished our share [of plates] before anyone else, it is naturally suggested that we should help the laggards'. |
