Description | Newall thinks that this [solar photography in Australia] is a question of importance which should be carefully considered. He hopes the Royal Society will express the view that a new observatory should be established, or that the work should be done at an existing establishment. It would mean special equipment and staff, needing to be maintained and therefore the sympathetic assistance of the colonial authorities would be desirable. He notes the incease in observational activity as a result of the International Union for Solar Research. A Director of an Australian Observatory might investigate sudden solar outbursts and simultaneous magnetic disturbances on Earth. He thinks the Committee should meet to exchange views.
In response to a request from Robert Harrison, the Assistant Secretary, for members of the Royal Society's Solar Research Committee to express their views on the establishment of a station for solar photography in Australia, bearing in mind existing commitments of Australian Observatories in conection with the astrographic chart. |
