Description | Printed minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.
Commencing with a list of Council members present: Francis Baily; Captain Francis Beaufort; Marc Isambard Brunel; John George Children; Samuel Hunter Christie; William Clift; Reverend James Cumming; Charles Konig; William Hasledine Pepys; Dr Peter Mark Roget; Reverend Richard Sheepshanks; the President, His Royal Highness Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex, in the chair.
Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. New members of the Council sworn in are listed. An approved alteration to the inscription on the obverse of the Royal Medal is recorded [existing and amended wording are transcribed in the minutes]. The reappointment of the following committees are approved with list of the committee members and in some cases a summary of the committee's purpose: committee for administration of the Donation Fund; Library Committee, Catalogue Committee, Telescope Committee, Meteorological Committee, Tide Committee, Medal Committee. Acceptance of Mr Daniell's offer to undertake the refilling of the Royal Society's water barometer. Appointment of a new comittee to draw up an address to the King [King William IV] thanking him for the recent proof of his continued patronage of the Royal Society and his continuation of the provision of 100 guineas granted by the King for two medals awarded annually. A letter from James Clark Ross relating to the Arctic expedition to be read at the next meeting [not reproduced in the minutes]. Letter from Thomas Spring Rice, Treasury Chambers, 13 November 1832, full text entered into the minutes: asking the Royal Society to advise the Commissioners of Excise on an instrument for ascertaining the duty to be paid on spirits, with Council resolving to establish a committee to advise on the hydrometer. |
