Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The Secretary to inform Sir John Barrow that Lieutenant Colonel Sabine was not named for the reduction of magnetic observations. Letter from the Marquess of Northampton, Somerset House, 12 December 1844, to the Earl of Haddington, full text entered into the minutes: forwarding the Society's resolutions on the North-West Passage Expedition, following Sir John Barrow's proposal. Letter from Thomas Hamilton, 9th Earl of Haddington, Admiralty, to the Marquess of Northampton, full text entered into the minutes: he is glad to receive views on another Arctic Expedition to justify fitting out vessels and he has th emeans of contacting officers on previous ventures; he asks for a report on the advantages to science of mounting an expedition. Council resolved to refer Lord Haddington to the previous and recent report made in advance of the late Antarctic Expedition of Sir James Clark Ross; the advantages of the North-West Passage proposal are chiefly in magnetical observations and this resolution to be passsed to Lord Haddington. Resolved that a bill of Dulau for books is paid. A gratuity of £10 to be paid to Mr. Henry Moore, Clerk to the University of London, for services to the Society prior to the appointment of Mr. Weld. |
