Commencing with a list of Council members present: Thomas Bell; John Joseph Bennett; William Bowman; Sir Benjamin Brodie; Reverend Professor James Challis; Samuel Hunter Christie; Lieutenant General Sir Howard Douglas; Dr John Forbes; Marshall Hall; Dr William Allen Miller; Richard Phillips; Edward Solly; William Henry Smyth; Lieutenant Colonel Edward Sabine, Vice President and Treasurer, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: new members of the Council made the required declaration and Vice Presidents appointed. A letter from the solicitors to the North and South Western Junction Railway asking them to sell the part of their Acton Estate that may be wanted for the proposed railway in accordance with an Act of Parliament (letter abstracted but not reproduced in full in minutes). A letter from the British Association for the Advancement of Science, dated 9 Dec 1850, regarding the establishment of a powerful reflecting telescope for the observation of the nebulae of the southern hemisphere (letter reproduced in full in minutes). The Library Committee reappointed and granted funds for binding and purchase of books. A letter from Francis Ronalds of the Kew Observarory, dated 18 Dec 1850, regarding his work on self-registering magnetographs which has been funded by the Donation Fund and the Government Grant and is now ready for trial (letter reproduced in full in minutes). A letter from James Cosmo Melvill of the East India Company, dated 12 Dec 1850, presenting the Royal Society with a register of the rise and fall of the tide at Coringa in the first half of 1850 (letter reproduced in full in minutes). A letter from Joseph Liouville sending thanks for his election as a Foreign Member (letter not reproduced in minutes).
