Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Notice of the scientific services of Alexander von Humboldt, by William Henry Smyth, full text entered into the minutes: an extended biography of von Humboldt, with a bibliography of his works; the Copley Medal awarded to von Humboldt 'for his eminent services in Terrestrial Physics during a series of years'. Award of other Royal Society Medals: the Rumford Medal to George Gabriel Stokes; and Royal Medals to James Prescott Joule and to Thomas Henry Huxley. List of President, Officers and Members of Council recommended to the Society for service in the ensuing year. Application was made by the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institute for copies of Philosophical Transactions: and by Dr. Ruppell on behalf of the Natural History Society of Frankfurt, both granted. Dr. Ruppell's offer of his works on natural history was accepted with thanks. Mr. Grove requested permission for Taylor and Francis to have a plate from his paper for reproduction in the Philosophical Magazine, granted |
