Commencing with a list of Council members present: Isaac Bayley Balfour; Andrew Ainslie Common; Andrew Russell Forsyth; Michael Foster; Richard Tetley Glazebrook; Alexander Henry Green; Sir John Kirk; Sir Joseph Lister; Oliver Joseph Lodge; William Davidson Niven; William Henry Perkin; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; Robert Arthur Talbot Gascoyne-Cecil, Marquis of Salisbury; John Scott Burdon Sanderson; Adam Sedgwick; Thomas Edward Thorpe; William Augustus Tilden; the Treasurer, Sir John Evans; William Cawthorne Unwin; the President, William Thomson, Lord Kelvin, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Submission of a statement by the Treasurer, Sir John Evans, on the financial position of the Royal Society's publications, entered in full into the minutes; with four recommendations on reducing the length of papers, drawing referees' attention to illustrations, and sending papers to referees before reading, so that more might be communicated elsewhere. Letter from the Royal Astronomical Society accepting the proposal to form a Joint Permanent Eclipse Committee; list of Fellows appointed to join the committee. Letter from the Geographical Society of the Pacific requesting a delegate to attend their anniversary meeting, declined. Candidates for Fellowship discussed and adjourned. Bills for engraving and other expenses.
