Among matters discussed or noted:
1. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and signed as correct. 2. Deaths of Dr. H.C. Sorby and Dr. W.E. Wilson: Sir Archibald Geikie and Professor Joly requested to prepare Obituary Notices. 3. Letter from Professor Retzius accepting the invitation to deliver the Croonian Lecture. 4. Report of the Soiree Committee on dates for soirees, refreshments and numbers of invitations: with Council resolving on numbers of invitations to be made available to members of the Soiree Committee and to Council members; and a list of learned societies to be retained on the invitations. 5. Attention was drawn to an appeal by the National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty for funds to purchase 20 acres of Marlborough Downs in order to preserve Sarsen Stones: Sir Archibald Geikie stated that £60 was required to complete the purchase and this was granted from the Donation Fund. 6. Lists of names entered into the Suggestion Book as candidates for election as Foreign Members of the Royal Society: a shortlist of seven names selected to fill four of the available six vacancies at a subsequent meeting. 7. The question of amending regulations of the Government Grant Committee to be considered at the next meeting of Council. 8. Notice given to call attention to the extent of the edition of Proceedings at the next Council meeting. 9. Application from Mr. F.M. Perkin for volumes of Royal Society publications not claimed by the late Sir William Perkin, acceded to. 10. List of bills for payment for printing and engraving. |
