Citation | Electrical Engineer, especially in submarine-cable telegraph work. Distinguished as an inventor, designer, and constructor of accurate electrical standards and instruments, and for the invention and practical execution of a system of duplex and high speed transmission on submarine cables. Also known as the author of original investigations on the following subjects, each with a permanent practical outcome: the design and construction of the Clark standard cell in detail (he carried out for the late Mr Latimer Clark the research which resulted in this standard of electromotive force); standards of capacity (micra condensers), composed of shellacked and paraffined plates of micra in definite proportion with specially low temperature correction for capacity; the Muirhead method of measuring internal battery resistance ; the form of artifical cable which has made the duplexing of submarine cables possible; the permanent establishment of Muirhead's system of automatic curb-transmission on cables; the design and custody of the British Association standards of capacity; Muirhead's cable relay and system of continuous retransmission from one section of cable into another of a series of cables without the employment of complicated synchronous mechanism at the intermediate stations. |
