Title | McClelland, John Alexander: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Professor of Physics, University College, Dublin. Fellow of the Royal University. Has written the following papers: - 'Selective Absorption of Rontgen Rays' (Proc Roy Soc, 1896); 'Cathodeand Lenard Rays' (ibid, 1897. In this paper he showed that the Lenard rays, like the cathode rays, consisted of negatively charged particules); 'On the Conductivity of Hot Gases from Flames' (Phil Mag, 1898); 'On the Action of Incandescent Metals in Producing Electric Conductivity in Gases' (Proc Camb Phil Soc, 1901); 'Ionization in the Atmosphere' (Trans Roy Dubl Soc, 1903); 'The Comparison of Capacities in Electric Work' (Proc Roy Dubl Soc, 1904); 'Secondary Radiation' (Trans Roy Dubl Soc, 1905); 'Secondary Radiation and Atomic Structure' (ibid, 1905); 'The Energy of Secondary Radiation' (ibid, 1906); 'Secondary Radiation from Compounds' (ibid, 1906); 'The Absorption of beta-Radium Rays by Matter' (with F O Hackett) (ibid, 1907); 'Secondary beta-Rays' (Proc Roy Soc, 1908). The last six papers deal with Secondary Radiation, and the two papers published in 1905, established for the first time the connection between atomic weights and the intensity of secondary radiation in the case of beta-rays. Other workers have since showed that a similar connection holds for the secondary radiation excited in other ways. The line of work opened up in these papers has been taken up by many investigators. The properties of secondary rays were worked out in detail in other papers. |
